Assistant Director of Academics

Job Description

The Assistant Director of Academics is responsible for managing academic data (including platforms), managing and analyzing academic data, collaborating with school leaders to craft systems and processes around effective data use, developing and executing organization-wide surveys related to academic programming, coordinating and executing reporting and compliance to external agencies, coordinating district-wide assessments, and serving as a liaison with accountability organizations including OSSE and the DC Public Charter School Board. The Assistant Director of Academics works closely with school leaders and the executive team to ensure Paul is an organization that makes decisions rooted in both quantitative and qualitative data. The Assistant Director of Academics reports to the Director of Schools. 

Primary Accountabilities

Data and Assessment – Network Level

  • Organizes student performance and management data and shares information with the Executive Team and educational staff
  • Responds to data requests and completes reports for monitoring authorities and external partners 
  • Leads professional development for school staff on assessment and data analysis topics 
  • Manages/creates a school performance dashboard for updating the Executive Team and Board of Trustees on student progress 
  • Coordinates the administration of high stakes and internal assessments for accountability 
  • Completes assigned sections of the annual federal and private grants application and follow-up reports 
  • Represents the school on district level planning and work teams related to assessment and accountability 
  • Leads the organization’s team that is responsible for conducting, analyzing, and reporting on annual surveys of school constituents and programs
  • Serves as the system-wide leader on programming around the usage of PARCC, Interim, MAP & WIDA data to promote student growth 
  • Writes an annual report of school performance following required guidelines and with input from the Executive Team and principals
  • Establishes test administration schedules, calendars, and procedures for the administration of all tests and oversees the collection of external and internal assessment data
  • Serves as LEA coordinator for all state, federal, and local testing; Plans, improves, and oversees testing for the state and local assessment programs including but not limited to PARCC, WIDA, MAP and internal benchmark assessments. 
  • Provides training for all campus personnel in test security and procedures as necessary 
  • Collaborates with Director of Schools to develop systems and processes that enable a culture of continuous student academic improvement and growth
  • Supports activities related to LEA planning and accountability requirements related to student achievement, including the Performance Management Framework (PMF), goal-and-target-setting process, and School Excellence plans
  • Assists the Executive Team with mandated supplemental reporting, program evaluation, and internal & external research as it applies to assessment or accountability measures
  • Develops and monitors the district’s comprehensive assessment plan
  • Serves as a resource and liaison for the district leadership team, school and district staff, and state/federal agencies on issues related to district, state and federal assessment, planning and  accountability

Data and Assessment – School Level

  • Assesses and build schools’ capacity to use student performance data to drive instruction
  • Collaborates with School Leaders to monitor the effectiveness of use and access to academic data 
  • Develops an integrated set of formative and interim assessments that are aligned with school-level scope and sequences and the Common Core Standards
  • Enables school leadership teams and teachers across both schools to consistently evaluate individual student performance; disaggregates information at the school, grade, classroom, subgroup, teacher, and subject levels

  • Utilizes these instruments to challenge and inform coaches on how to effectively use data for good instructional decision-making
  • Utilizes assessment data to make adjustments to curriculum materials, unit plans, etc. 

Curriculum Development and Sharing

  • Develops and/or coordinates the development/adoption of Common Core (NGSS for Science) curriculum materials for teachers and students
  • Collaborates with school level leadership teams and teacher teams to develop classroom materials, such as unit plans, aims sequences, and in-class assessments
  • Facilitates knowledge capture by developing systems for capturing, codifying, and sharing materials and best practices across the network, including the creation of a video library of high-quality lessons
  • Ensures efficient dissemination and implementation of new materials using technology or workshops

  • Master’s degree in education related field
  • Five years of experience in education 
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience
  • Demonstrated success using data to drive programming
